Serve One Another in Love 2/5/2017
If you have ever received food from church family after a surgery, death of a family member, or birth of a child, you know the value of our comfort food ministry. It is a blessing to be able to share these life experiences with church family. On the other hand, have you ever watched a friend go through a surgery, illness, death, or birth without the support of church family? It’s hard to understand how people go through these life-changing experiences alone or without the support that we enjoy. One pretty simple way that we show each other how much we care is to take care of physical needs. In times of stress, taking a meal is a good way to show someone that you care. At Levy, Rachel Rogers is in charge of coordinating meals for families when there is a new birth. She uses an online system that is working well to coordinate this need. We thank Rachel so much for her hard work in keeping this running so smoothly; she is doing an excellent job. Laura Simpson is in charge of the grief ministry and food for family meals when a Levy member passes away. Laura, along with a team of Frances Fletcher and Peggy Pettey and others, put so much energy and compassion in to managing these needs when there is a death. Thanks to Laura and her team for all that they are doing.
The comfort food ministry for shut-ins, illness and hospitalizations is currently under construction. We are thankful that Jacqui Hurley will be helping with this effort. We are reorganizing so that we can make sure that church family needs are taken care of efficiently and easily. Frankly, sometimes it can be a bit challenging to coordinate meals. To be most effective, we need YOUR help. If you are willing to be on the call list, please sign-up on the sheets being passed around this morning, sign-up at Levy Central, or on the Levy Women’s Ministry Facebook group page. If you sign-up, the calls will only be occasional. We understand that everyone is busy, so we will rotate how often you are asked to take food to a family. We will also begin using the Levy Women’s Ministry group page on Facebook. This is a closed group where we will post needs and coordinate meals. Recently, we posted a need, and the response was great. If you are not in the group, please send a request on Facebook, and we will add you to the group. We thank you for your willingness to help, so that we can all “serve one another in love.” (Galatians 5:13)

Van Rides and Foyer Faces 1/15/2017
Last weekend, twelve ladies from Levy were privileged to attend the Heartfelt Conference in Monroe, LA. It was a great time to be spiritually encouraged by the conference speakers, but also by each other.
If you have never been on a church van trip, you are missing out. While everything may not have gone exactly as planned, we had a wonderful time. It’s interesting that spiritual encouragement can happen in the most unsuspecting ways. I don’t recall any scripture being quoted amongst ourselves during our travel, but getting to spend time with our Christian sisters from Levy left me feeling very encouraged and connected to these ladies.
I wonder why that is? It may have something to do with what Joneal Kirby, the founder of Heartfelt, said at the conference. Sometimes we get in the habit of smiling politely at church and exchanging “I’m fine” when asked how we are doing. The reality is that we are not fine. She encouraged us to take the time to get past these “foyer faces” and be more transparent and real with each other. I think that is the key reason for the spiritual encouragement and closeness that I felt with these women who went on the trip. We got past our foyer faces. It’s pretty hard to ride on a van for 6 hours (yes, it was supposed to be more like 3.5) and not be real. At times, being real can be scary, but it can also be such a comfort.
If you are not involved in Heartfelt or some group of Christian women, I hope that you will strongly consider it. Look for ways to spend more time with sisters in Christ. It will make such a big difference in your life!

“Make New Friends, Keep the Old,
One is Silver and the Other Gold” 1/15/2017
Did you ever sing this song as a kid? I was a Brownie leader when my first daughter was in elementary school and we sang this song at every meeting. All the girls would gather in a circle, hold hands, recite the Brownie pledge and sing this song. I’ll never forget the smiles on their faces as they sang. They enjoyed getting together to learn new things, share laughs and fun activities. Isn’t that what friends do?
Recently several long-time friends and I got together for dinner. It had been way too long since we had all sat around a table just to catch up on each other’s lives. As we visited and laughed, we commented on how our stories had changed over the years, just as our lives had. We are all grandmothers now. Since a couple of us have already lost our parents, we are able to be of support and encouragement to those who are fortunate to still have a parent living but dealing with health issues.
Christian friends are some of life’s greatest blessings, and I hope you have at least a small circle of friends that you can enjoy life with. Proverbs 17:17 says “A friend loves at all times…” I do not know how different my life would have been had it not been for Christian friends who have loved me, laughed with me, cried and prayed with me, encouraged me, and shared Christ with me.

Intentional Change 1/8/2017
A new year brings thoughts on change, and change is rarely easy. It has been said, “To get something that you have never had, you have to do things you have never done.”
The task of creating change in our lives is being intentional with choices that we make. Change is most often linked with behavioral changes, which can create a difficult struggle, as it’s challenging to form new habits. Whether your goals for the year are spiritual, physical, or improvements in relationships, it all begins with the renewing of your mind, and an intentional plan to do something different than you have done before. What do you plan to work on in 2017?
The scriptures are full of encouragement that can help on the journey:
Joshua 1:9, “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”
Jeremiah 29:11, “For I know the plans I have for you declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”
Isaiah 43:19, “See I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.”
Philippians 4:6-8, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. 8 Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things”
2 Corinthians 4:16-18, “Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. 17 For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. 18 So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.”

Christmas Reminder 12/18/2016
This is a slightly edited version of a Facebook post:
This can be a most difficult time of the year, for so many. Although, I believe we all try to find joy in this season, it can be a time that we are reminded of those we are not sharing it with or will never share it with again. So be kind and remember that there are people, for whatever reason, that are not looking forward to Christmas. Some people are not surrounded by large wonderful families.
Some of us have problems during the holidays and are overcome with great sadness and depression. Many people have no one to spend this time with and are besieged by loneliness. We all need caring, loving thoughts right now. I ask wherever you might be, however you experience the holiday, to pray for and give support to all those who have family problems, health struggles, job issues, worries of any kind and just need to know that someone cares.
Do it for all of us, for nobody is immune.
Take it one step further. There are so many things to do to give back to our communities and to help someone you may not know. Smile at strangers, greet them with happiness, open the door for someone, send a text to someone to let them know you are thinking of them. Do something in your community to help out this season – donate warm things, serve at a shelter, serve dinner to someone, participate in Meals on Wheels. You can always say something nice to someone to offer encouragement during this time of year. – Author Unknown

Reflecting on 2016 12/11/2016
During this holiday season as we reflect on the birth of Jesus, let us also dig a little deeper into our own relationship with our Lord and Savior. What have I done to glorify him in 2016? Who have I shared Jesus with? How many people have I encouraged to be a better Christian? In what ways did I show the love of Christ by serving others? How many times did I visit the sick and shut-ins? How many meals did I help prepare for the homeless? How many phone calls did I make to friends and loved ones just to tell them how much I love them? Did I ever offer to help with a ministry or community outreach? Was Jesus truly reflected in my actions in 2016?
There is so much to be done through the Women’s Ministries at Levy. My prayer is that every lady in this congregation will decide right now to become involved in a ministry, if you are not already. Would you like to learn to knit lap throws for the elderly? If you enjoy cooking, how about helping with Comfort Food ministry? Is working with children a passion of yours? I’m sure Sierra would love to talk with you. Be willing to step up and give of yourself to Levy’s efforts for building a strong family. I know without a doubt that this time next year you will have developed a servant heart, a deep sense of compassion for others, and a closer relationship with Christ. We need you!

I Am Thankful For… 12/4/2016
the mess to clean up after a party because it means I have been surrounded by friends.
the taxes I pay because it means I am employed.
the clothes that fit a little too snug because it means I have enough to eat.
a lawn that needs mowing, windows that need cleaning and gutters that need fixing because it means I have a home.
all the complaining I hear about our government because it means we have freedom of speech.

There IS so much to be thankful for. Pretty soon, we will be a bit inconvenienced as we begin construction of our new building. As Danny has said, what a gift that little inconvenience will be because it is a sign of growth at Levy and God’s blessings on us! We will celebrate that new beginning with “Building Levy’s Legacy” celebration on Sunday, December 11 following morning worship. We will have a ground-breaking and balloon release. Then Bill Oldridge will have chili cooked for us. Plan to be part of the celebration!

Gratitude Turns What We
Have Into Enough 11/20/2016
I have a little plaque in my home with that quote on it. In the past couple of years I have come to realize just how true that statement really is. Life has continually shown me that happiness isn’t in worldly possessions. I’ve had to give up many of my ” treasures” in the last couple of years which has resulted in my living a less cluttered and simpler lifestyle. Surprisingly it feels really good. I’ve amazed myself at how easy it is to make-do with what I have and not worry about what I don’t have – and why do I need more “stuff” anyway?
God makes sure I have all I need. I’ve been blessed beyond measure – wonderful Christian parents, a family of my own, precious grandchildren, Christian friends and the love of my Lord. But how often do I stop and express to Him my gratitude? I have to admit it’s not nearly enough. My heart has been so full lately as I reflect on all the ways Christ makes Himself known to me with opportunities to serve others.
Many local folks recognize Kevin, the young black guy who stands on street corners waving advertisement signs for a living. We invited him to have Christmas dinner with us a couple of years ago. It was such a joy to have him join us and to share our holiday meal with him. We sent lots of leftovers home with him and he was so appreciative that we would do such a nice thing for a stranger – even though he was very familiar to all of us who see him regularly in public. Well one night earlier this week I noticed him standing on the corner holding and rocking his sign. It had gotten dark by the time I came out of my appointment, and I noticed him standing by the door of a nearby convenience store. I stopped to check on him. He appeared very lonely and hungry. I asked him if I could get him something to eat. He finally agreed so I went inside and bought him some food. What a simple thing to do and it only cost me a couple of dollars and a few minutes of my time. Why don’t I seek out ways to do as Christ would do more often? Where is my sense of gratefulness? It’s people like Kevin who teach me about Christ’s love and remind me over and over that I need to be putting my gratitude to work.
During this season when being thankful is on our minds, let’s all try to be more grateful for what we have been blessed with and from whom they came. You just might find that what you already have is enough!

It’s My Pleasure 11/13/2016
The servers at Chick-fil-A say “It’s my pleasure” after filling your order or request. The popularity of the restaurant’s food; the family atmosphere when dining in; and the respectful manners of the staff have all contributed to making the phrase a familiar one in our conversations. So…it’s my pleasure to say that it is time to plan for our giving to buy Christmas gifts for children in the children’s homes that we have helped in past years.
Funds will be donated in the adult Sunday morning classes beginning on November 27th. We will also collect monies on December 4th and December 11th. As in the past, if you woulrather give privately, you may give your gift to Julie Watson or to me. If you want to donate by check, please make it out to the Levy church and write “Children’s Homes Christmas” or something similar on the memo line.
I was recently asked if I was concerned that other requests for funds to buy gifts for foster children and needy families might lessen the support for children in group homes. My answer was “no” because Levy is a generous congregation with a heart for children, and the number of children who need help is so great that support for only one “program” would greatly lessen the number of children that we help. Thank you for making this coming holiday season a memorable one for several children!

The people in the pew… 10/30/2016
They are parents burdened because of their prodigal children…
They are grandparents raising grandchildren because if they don’t…
They are caregivers wondering if anyone understands…
They are single parents facing double duty…
They are brethren struggling with secret sins and failing again…
They are smiling faces hoping to hide their depression…
They are a childless couple facing disappointment (again)…
They are folks facing both cancer and fears…
They are parents who have had to do the unthinkable: bury a child…
They are parents struggling to raise a special needs child…
They are brothers and sisters who have done everything they know to keep their marriage going, but failed…
They are widows who sit down as one at a table for two…
They are sisters who harbor the secret of being a battered wife…
They are stepparents who seem to be on the outside looking in…
They are the lonely, the scared, the hurting…
Etc.
But they come. They come to the Table to share their grief with the One who gave His all. They come to lift up their voice in song while brushing away a tear. They come to pray and connect with their only hope. They come to encourage someone else while hoping someone will encourage them. They come to hear the Good News and hope to take something away that will heal their hurt.
These are the people in the pew.

His Story 10/9/2016
“People often ask me how our homeless friends became homeless. What are their stories? Well here’s one story from this week:
The gentleman was very eager to talk and share his struggles, and his hopes. In recent years his parents both died, his dad after a long battle with Alzheimer’s and his mom from a battle with cancer. Those were hard losses but he knows losing our parents is part of life.
Then, he lost his son in Iraq, his only child.
But he and his wife still had their life. She had her job, he had his job, they had their routine of work, dinner, favorite tv shows (starting with Wheel of Fortune), their house. Their Life.
One day he woke up to discover his 53-year old wife had died in her sleep. From a condition that could have been easily treated, had they known about it. *From a condition I have.
His family was gone. He was alone. He started to drink. He missed work. He lost his job. He lost his house. In the past 17 months his life unraveled. He was ashamed and didn’t want to ask for help. — He remembered how he used to think about homeless people and how he wouldn’t help them because they shouldn’t have let themselves get in that position.’’ And then, he understood and he felt guilty.
He told us he reached a point that he cried out to God and begged for a sign that He was real, and he begged for help. Within 3 minutes a truck pulled up and the driver said if he could clean up and work hard he would hire him. Someone gave him the number to call The Van. Clean clothes, hygiene items, a blanket, bandages, and food.
He has a job. He has a goal for renting a place to live. He has hope. He wants to Live, not just Exist. And he wants to help others in his situation. He is thankful for a new chance.

On October 24 at Soup & Sisters, we will take donations for money or new socks for Mark & Dianna Deal to give to the homeless. Mark & Dianna diligently do rounds in “The Van” to feed the homeless in Central AR on Thursday nights. They fund, prepare, and package meals once every week to feed approximately 40 people, as well as giving warm clothing & meeting other needs. Let’s help!
The Elephant Syndrome 10/2/2016
It is said that a full-grown male African Elephant can measure 7 ½ meters in length and weigh 6 tons or more. However, a baby elephant is quite manageable in size and strength and is easily restrained to a small area with one end of a chain fastened to its leg, and the other to a good -sized tree. The elephant soon learns that escape is impossible. However, this inescapable condition is soon outgrown as the animal quickly becomes stronger. The questions then becomes, why doesn’t the animal escape? Because it has learned from experience that the specific act of escape from the restraint is impossible. Not only this, but the animal submits to the overall authority of its trainer because its submission to the restraint is carried over to other areas. This intelligent animal learns at an early age that it must submit to the will of its trainer. It is quite amazing to see these mammoth giants being guided around by a small rope or ridden like a pony. This is only possible because of the conditioning that the animal experienced early in its life. In essence, the elephant has learned that it is helpless, that it cannot escape and that it must submit to the will of its trainer. – Author Unknown
Some call this phenomenon “The Elephant Syndrome.” Despite being extraordinarily strong and fully able to escape restraint, a trained elephant can be led and managed on a small rope alone, unaware of its great power. I wonder how often we are no different. ‘I pray also that you will have greater understanding in your heart so you will know the hope to which he has called us and that you will know how rich and glorious are the blessings God has promised His holy people. 19 And you will know that God’s power is very great for us who believe. That power is the same as the great strength 20 God used to raise Christ from the dead and put him at His right side in the heavenly world.’ (Eph.1:18-20 NCV)
How often do we convince ourselves that we are unable to accomplish something or are helpless to overcome because of past failures? Ephesians 1:18-20 says we have access to the same power that raised Jesus from the dead; Satan wants us to be unaware of this, or believe that it is only for others. He wants us to believe that we are bound by failure and cannot overcome. This week, I encourage you to enjoy the confidence that we can have in the gift of “overcoming,”- that incredible power that God offers to US.

In His Time 9/18/2016
“‘For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart'(Jeremiah 29:11-13).”
Do you have a favorite scripture? I have several favorite passages but this particular one has encouraged me many, many times in my adult life. During the tough times, I remind myself of these verses in Jeremiah that were God’s promise to the Israelites who had recently lost the land they had been promised due to their disobedience. These verses show God is faithful, is in control, loving, patient, compassionate and full of mercy. God has shown me over and over again that He has much better plans for me than I could have ever imagined, showing his mercy and love for me. He listens to my every thought and prayer when I call on Him, always. Every time a door has closed behind me, God has led me to a better place – most of the time it is a place that I would not have considered or even thought attainable.

Thank You God For… Bifocals? 9/11/2016
Well, that’s not how I really feel about it, but I am trying. In my mind I am just barely 25, so it seems awfully soon to be getting bifocals. That word has always sounded like geriatric jargon to me-until now. The reality is that I am old enough for this. This article space has seen many a mental and spiritual reframe, thanks to Suzanne, and I will strive for the same.
I haven’t spent too much time thinking about the bifocal situation this week. When I have thought about it, my thoughts on the matter haven’t been very positive. At the optometrist’s office a sweet lady, about my mother’s age, reassured me that it was okay- that I will be glad. However, I am struggling with appreciating the opportunity to improve the blurry-small-print circumstances that I now find myself in.
I can’t possibly call this a real trial or struggle. It’s such a small thing, a tiny inconvenience among a vast sea of blessings, but a reframe is still needed. Reminders on reframing led me to the book of Philippians. This book is one of my favorites and is essentially an instruction manual on joy in all kinds of circumstances. The writer might seem like an unlikely adviser on joy, as Paul faced every kind of trouble imaginable. Somehow, he still managed to live joy in his life and speak it into the lives of others. Philippians 4:4 says, “Rejoice in the Lord always, again I say rejoice.” This goes beyond tolerance and acceptance of discomfort; it takes attitude to a higher plane of gratefulness and even rejoicing. It’s not easy, but doable, or God wouldn’t ask us to do it. I am not talking about avoiding God-given emotions for the sake of joy, as even Jesus experienced a range of emotions. I am talking about the process of learning to direct our thoughts. Paul was very accustomed to reframing things in his life. By learning to control negative thoughts (Philippians 4:8) and choosing an attitude of joy, we can all learn to “rejoice in the Lord always.”
So, yes, I will be practicing authentically saying, “thank you God for bifocals!” ?

SEPT 6 – Ladies Fall Bible Session – Forever Faithful: Who God Is and Why It Matters by Linda Smith. These eight weeks of lessons offer a video view of “God’s interaction with His creation from Genesis to Revelation”, and “the reassurance that God, our Creator, is forever faithful to us, His creation”. SEPT 7 – Levy Ladies Wednesday Night Class – Carolyn and I have been working to find new material that would be a good fit for our Levy Ladies Class. If you’ve never been to our ladies class, we would like to invite you to give us a try. If you have been in the past, we would like to invite you to come back. Our class is composed of women of all ages. We are hoping to help cross generational lines to all learn from each other and grow closer as sisters in Christ and in our understanding of His teachings. In a world that hesitates to talk about what really matters, she didn’t seem to give it a second thought. It wasn’t possible to have a superficial conversation with her. Suzanne had these cards printed to give her testimony, tell others that they were precious to God, and to invite them to be with us in our church services. She didn’t mind sweetly asking, “Do you know the Lord”? She understood our calling to love God and serve others, and it was constantly on her mind. She was always trying to think of new ways to reach people. She was determined, and nothing was going to keep her from that work.
Suzanne’s ability to speak with people and draw them in was remarkable. Her strategy was to learn their names and stories so that she could call them by name, pray for them and follow-up as soon as possible. This created many opportunities to share God’s love. At Fox Ridge, the staff became quickly acquainted with her and considered it a privilege to be assigned to her wing during their shift. They even became a little territorial about it. ? Even in her last days, Suzanne was still ministering. She would encourage and pray with the staff that came to her room to care for her. She was suffering, but despite that, she still made ministry a priority in her life.
This one little card taught that a little boldness (or a lot) won’t hurt. It can be uncomfortable to think about encountering people and getting that personal, but Suzanne was well-practiced and knew how to go about it in a way that people would receive. With her smile and attitude, she was able to show others that she cares and that God cares for them too.
There is not enough space or words to honor Suzanne. She is a rare jewel – a very special person that will leave a lasting imprint on us. There is no question where she is. I like the thought of her taking in all of the sights of Heaven. I can picture the rich details of her description and how overjoyed and at peace she truly is. She challenged us all to live our lives in such a way that we will go there too. In simple ways, she found a way to make such a big difference. It’s amazing what a willing heart and just one little card can do.

That I announce Barbara Cooper and Paula Morse will be co-leading the Women’s ministries. Both are mature women of God, well-prepared, skilled and dedicated to the ministries. They will each have assigned areas as well as working together on some projects.
Susan Cloninger, Linda Peebles, Carol Ruggles, Tani Joiner and Dorothy Taylor have served in the core group for many years. They have been a vital part of the women’s ministry and I know they will continue to support Paula and Barbara.
Hopefully, I will be able to write an occasional article and be available as a resource. I have loved every minute of my work in the Women’s ministries.

Heart Felt Ministries 8/14/2016
We are getting ready to kick off our 2nd season of Heart Felt Ministries in just a couple of weeks! So many of the ladies that participated last season have expressed how much they loved being a part of these small groups. We anticipate another wonderful year! This ministry is very purposeful in equipping women through Bible study and by growing friendships that span generations. Women are encouraged in their faith, mentoring relationships occur, and Godly families are strengthened.
This ministry would not be possible without the commitment of our Heart Moms- they put their heart and soul into planning great meals, preparing a Bible study, and hosting a fun night in their homes. THANK YOU Heart Moms!! For those of you who have committed to be heart sisters, please know that you are already being prayed for! Our groups are set and registration is now over.
Those of you who are plugged in, please mark your calendars for Monday August 29th at 7 p.m. We will have desserts, get to know our groups, and Mindy Landcaster from West Monroe, La will be our speaker. Looking forward to spending a wonderful evening with you all!

There is nothing like going through the real thing to understand fully what you have been told by others. On July 14, I made the move to Assisted Living. The hardest part was the week before the move. Decisions-decisions-decisions! To give you a “play dose” of reality go home today and think about what 90% of your stuff you would not be able to take. Think about who you could give your precious pet to. Now if the move was about going to heaven that would be easier because we all know we can’t take our stuff with us. But this move is before I go to heaven. It’s a new lifestyle, a new mission field, it’s having others helping with my medicine, my bath, and pushing me everywhere in my wheelchair. It’s about not cooking anymore which is some women’s dream; but not mine.
Now let me tell you how things are going as I welcome the sun rising on the ninth day of living here. I love it! Now I mean love, love, love it! My room (a small studio apartment) is a sanctuary to return to after being with many people and daily activities. The 10% of my “stuff” I brought are my favorite lovely things with an emphasis on pink. My ministry of sharing our Lord began the first hour of being here. The aides come in for me to pray for them and put names on my prayer list. AND some of them know of Levy because of Community Day so I get to have some Jesus time with them. Some come in to talk and pray after they get off the clock.
Oh, I almost forgot to mention that I’m really adapting to having my meals served in the dining room. I might be getting a bit spoiled.

Sweet Sisters, Are You Listening? 7/3/2016
My “Are you Listening?” today is to listen intently to Danny Dodd as he preaches about following Jesus personally and assuredly. I’m so excited about what I am hearing. Listen well all the time to God’s Word; but especially as it pertains to your individual responsibility to grow in following Christ. We will answer to God personally for our lives.
Now sisters, I wasn’t born yesterday, so believe me I know the distractions of being a mother with young children. I know about blinding headaches and wondering if you left the iron on or forgot to turn the oven off, etc., etc. But there is good news in Levy land…we have archived sermons we have streamed each week. After Chad Gardner told me that last Sunday I couldn’t wait to try it out. How I love listening to it again and again. Listening to it again at home gives me a chance to break it down and set goals.
God designed us to have a rich life in Christian experiences and in our daily prayer, study life and good deeds. Start small if you feel overwhelmed…baby steps at first…but start if you are in a status quo period. The thing is the Christian life is not about saying I will if I want to and I won’t if I don’t. That’s childish and God expects more out of us as we grow up in Him. Most of us want to enrich our lives spiritually… we just get overwhelmed with all of the ground clutter in our lives. Seek that peace that passes all earthly understanding. It’s yours to claim…go for it!

A Cup of Water in His Name 6/26/2016
The greatest gifts I have received since the day after my surgery in April are the many cups of ice water that seem to magically appear by my bedside. From the very first cup, my mind went to the scripture in Mark 9:41, “For whosoever gives you a cup of water to drink because of your name as followers of Christ, truly I say to you, he (she) will not lose his (her) reward.”(NAS) I was in the hospital room from midnight until noon the next day before my surgery; I had prayed with nurses and doctors and proclaimed our Lord to all. They knew I was a “follower of Christ.”
Water may not mean to you what it does to me; but don’t tell me how you hate water unless you spent some time in the Goliad, Texas area during the 50’s…you talk about mineral water. But, I’m not. I’m talking about spiritual water and the good water of Arkansas. The nurses were so touched that I thanked them in Jesus’ name. The cups of water opened up many segues to talk about following Jesus. When I went down to Rehab it continued; there was that cup of water. Rn’s, LPN’s, Medical Assistants, even Doctors have brought me cups of water. Home Health people have continued with that cup of ice water. My RN, Physical Therapist, Occupational Therapist, and precious Felecia, that helps with my shower, all keep that cup filled. My sweet Levy sisters do the same. Cornelia Reaves and Terry Rainey are here most everyday…they fill my cup when they come and before they leave.
Bottom line: Don’t hesitate to give a cup of water in Jesus’ name. Some might not be big on ice like I am; but believe me they can appreciate the cup of water their way in Jesus’ name.

Prayer Will Get You There 6/12/2016
A number of years ago, Carole Smith led our Annual Levy Ladies’ Renewal. Her theme was “Prayer Will Get You There.” I’ll never forget that Renewal and since then I’ve loved watching the power of prayer working in my life. Last week I found a new way for “prayer to get me there.” My Home Health Lady cautioned me that my breathing was getting labored and my oxygen level was falling. She told me to lay down and don’t talk to help it stabilize. Don’t talk! (That is a hard one for me.) I closed my eyes and decided to pray for my precious home health person. I was amazed at how quickly praying for others got my breathing under control and another bonus was how peaceful it made me feel. Are you are looking for a de-stressor that doesn’t cost any money? Invest in your prayer life. Along with that, remember to smile. “Be still and know that I am God.” Thank you, Heavenly Father!

Plan B? 5/22/2016
Most of my life it seems I have had a Plan B in the back of my mind if Plan A didn’t pan out. Plan B usually being a modified version of Plan A that wasn’t hard to switch over. A tweak here and a tweak there and all was well. It’s the really big things in my life that have been the non-tweakables. A number of years ago, I observed my beloved brother and mentor, Leon Barnes and how he let the Holy Spirit lead in his life. I decided that was what was missing in my life and it was. I began to trust in the Lord more in all parts of my life for I knew the Lord would not pull the rug out from under my feet. I was on solid ground and I had the promise that He would not put more on me than I could bear. The more I trusted, the more my faith grew.
Four weeks ago today I found myself in the emergency room gasping for breath (I’m sure not a pretty sight…but then vanity has never been one of my strong suites). I felt a calmness and a peace that may have seemed out of place. But I knew that I knew Who was in charge of my life and I knew I was heaven bound. I began to notice who I might ask if they knew our Lord…doctors, nurses, patients. It didn’t matter because we all need the Lord. I decided in that ER cubicle that come what may I would be an ambassador for Christ from the hallways to the surgical wing to rehab or wherever I ended up.
Here’s the thing we never know when we might have a plan A that we cannot tweak. I was looking forward to Ryan and Lyndsey’s high school graduation instead I was teaching about Jesus in the mission field of the hospital. What if I had never prepared to teach Jesus or learned His truths or knew about the Comfortor. Don’t put off these most valuable principals of the Christian life. If you haven’t been baptized into Christ where all the blessings are; obey from your heart right away. Learn the comforting principles and then start teaching others.
Where does all of my peace come from…trusting in the Lord and knowing I’m heaven bound.

“’TRAIN UP A CHILD IN THE WAY HE SHOULD GO, EVEN WHEN HE IS OLD HE WILL NOT DEPART FROM IT'(PROVERBS 22:6).” 5/15/2016
Watching the families at Levy leads me to the conclusion that this is happening in a good way at Levy. I see moms and dads serving God in many different capacities and they are taking their children with them to help. I’ve seen moms taking their daughters with them to visit people in the nursing homes. I’ve seen moms and dads involving their children in the Magi boxes for Haiti. I’ve seen families involving their children in filling disaster buckets with needed items for families whose lives have been devastated by disasters. I see parents of all ages making sure their children are in Bible Classes learning, from dedicated teachers, about God and how to best serve him. I see teachers giving their time, their knowledge and their love to children of all ages from Cradle Roll through seniors in high school. I know we can always improve, but I just have to say, “Well done, Levy family!” Thank you for the great examples I see all around me. Worshipping and working with Christian brothers and sisters who are dedicated to following Jesus is a blessing from God. I love you, Levy family.
Dedicated teachers sometimes need help. We always need people who are willing to substitute as helpers in the Nursery Department (babies, ones and twos). It is not hard to sit behind children and help them when they need help. We need teachers who are willing to rotate with other teachers in these classes. Heart Moms/Heart Sisters 5/8/2016
May will be our last month meeting together in Heart Groups before we take a break for the summer. Whether a heart mom or a heart sister, I hope these gatherings have been a blessing in your life! Heartfelt Friends Ministry was created by Dr. Joneal Kirby after a study of the book of Titus, particularly the command in Titus 2:3-5, “Teach the older women to be reverent in the way they live… to teach what is good. Then they can train the younger women to love their husbands and children, to be self-controlled and pure, to be busy at home, to be kind, and to be subject to their husbands, so that no one will malign the word of God.”
If you are not already a part of Heartfelt Friends, we would LOVE to have you join us! Over ninety ladies of all ages participated this past season. We get together once a month in small groups to share dinner, a bible study, get to know each other better, and have some fun! It’s a great way to get to know ladies across the generations! “Lord, You can’t mean me!” 4/24/2016
For many years, I had every excuse you could think of for not talking to people about Jesus. I was too timid; I couldn’t recall where the scriptures were in the Bible and who would listen to me anyway. Actually, my heart’s desire was to become a little brown wren that disappeared into the brown paneling on our walls at that time. My main fear, I believe, was the fear of rejection. I was sure that when scripture talks about speaking the word of God with boldness it did not mean me. You understand, of course, I’m not talking about taking a man’s role of proclaiming the gospel; I’m talking about sharing woman to woman about becoming a baptized believer. Telling my story about what the Lord has meant to me in my life. I was doing my best to follow Jesus and keep my mouth shut when it came to asking unbelievers if they knew Jesus, my Lord. Now read that again, please. Doesn’t that sound strange? I had bought the line that living by example was enough.
What moved me over the line of fear? One of the biggest things was being validated by people of God that believed in me as a godly woman. Leon Barnes played a big part in that. He believed in me when I didn’t believe in myself. He gave me assignments that challenged me in ministry. The more study, prayer and ministry I did the more I fell in love with Jesus. Then, I just couldn’t keep it to myself anymore.
Sisters, for what it’s worth, I believe in you and I pray that you get beyond the fear. “Listen” intently as you read Ephesians 6:10-13. Put on the whole armor of God, tell your story and the old, old story for it’s always new to those that don’t know Him yet. You can do it!

Lukewarm or On Fire? 4/10/2016
“You are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other. So, because you are lukewarm – neither hot nor cold – I am about to spit you out of My mouth.” Rev. 3:15-1 NIV. More than likely if you have been a Christian for very long you have slipped into being lukewarm a time or two. Simply put, maybe you just took your focus off Jesus and put it somewhere else without even thinking about it happening. As we can see by the scripture above, God’s pretty plain spoken about how He feels about that.
I’m a believer that sometimes when we start a new godly habit we might have to pray for the desire to start it and act “as if” for a while for it to catch “fire” and become a true passion. We’re not to “act as if” forever in things like Bible study, a consistent prayer life, reaching out to others and the list could go on. At some point, that godly behavior moves into truly being a passion not an “acting as if.” The song our children sing, “Read your Bible and pray every day and you’ll grow, grow, grow” applies to adults as well. Old songs like “Dust on the Bible” were to touch our hearts about not neglecting our study of God’s Word.
There’s nothing like a church that’s on fire about following Jesus and is willing to take the gospel to a lost world. We “send the light” and we must “take the light.”

What Is Your Story About Becoming a Christian? 4/3/2016
When Christian women meet together and share their stories of becoming a Christian; it increases our faith. The times at Harding when we have WINGS (Women In God’s Service); our Levy Ladies Annual Renewals, in our Heart Groups or just two or three together having coffee. Those stories of faith also appeal to many who have not yet put on Christ. What is your story? Think about the times that you have grown in your faith. Just because you were raised in the church doesn’t mean you don’t have an exciting story. Can you remember times that your faith was challenged or times that you can look back on and see the impact that being a Christian made on your life? In my thirties, my faith became my own and not just the faith of my great grandmother. It was a time that I questioned many things. The creation was what I experienced by looking at everything from a blade of grass to the clouds in the sky. God became so real through my own eyes. Be ready to tell your story. Pray to have the desire to tell it. And pray for the Spirit to lead you to someone who needs to hear your story. Keep on following Jesus. It’s a wonderful life no matter what our circumstances.
Thrive Not Just Survive
My granddaughter, Bethany, took a martial arts class (I think that what it’s called). She had all the moves down pat. I said, “Bethany you don’t use that on anyone do you?” She said, “Well, Grana if my brother’s getting the best of me, I will.” The last few weeks satan has tried to get the best of me by throwing one physical ailment after another in my path. I’m determined to thrive not just survive. What that means for me is keeping my mind in the right attitude. Being an overcomer. Climbing over a wall that I can’t bust through. Calling for support and encouragement from other Christians. Singing the songs of victory in Jesus. Following Jesus!

We Are Mentors
(Whether we want to be or not.)
Do you find that every year you add to your Christian life, your gratitude and love grows for Jesus? It’s so awesome that He died for us that it is hard to comprehend. Try to imagine the heavy grief of those that saw Him crucified and then listen to this with your heart: “Now on the first day of the week Mary Magdalene came early to the tomb, while it was still dark, and saw the stone already taken away from the tomb.” (John 20:1) Then turn to John 20 and read the rest of the account. The last verse brings great comfort “…Blessed are they who did not see, and yet believed.”
satan (his name is not capitalized on purpose) loves to shake us up and put obstacles in our way when he sees our love for Christ grow. While we are studying “Following Jesus,” it seems like I have experienced more of his obstacles than usual. I’m studying more, praying more and reaching out to many more about the Lord. That ole goat, satan, doesn’t like that. When you go through times like this, sing the Lord’s praises. Some of the children’s songs are great to build your faith. Songs like “Soldiers of Christ Arise,” “When the Roll is Called Up Yonder” and so many others I don’t have space to write about.
Jesus Christ, Our Lord, suffered and died for us so that we might live eternally. Don’t take this lightly. If you haven’t accepted His invitation to follow Him, please prayerfully consider it today.
And remember HE AROSE…To God be the glory for all that we do.

What is an International Prayer Warrior? 3/20/2016
An intentional prayer warrior is someone who means it when they say they will pray for you. From my experience, you develop into a determined prayer warrior the more you pray. It takes some thought and prayer for you to develop this good habit. People are counting on you. God is listening for your prayers. You have to discover ways to remind yourself to pray. You learn to pray even if you don’t feel like it.
For me, it works to have my prayer list in different places. My framed black board by my computer station is hung where I see it all day long. My refrigerator is another good place for my prayer list and my bathroom mirror over the vanity. A list in my purse when I have down time waiting to see a doctor or dentist. When you get serious about being a prayer warrior you will find ways to remind you. People set their phone alarms for lots of things. Why not set the alarm to remind you to pray? I heard recently about a group of prayer warriors that are praying for their community. They prayed for the people in their 501 area code at 5:01 a.m. and the others at 5:01 p.m. That helped them remember.
Saying you will pray for someone is not a flippant request. It a serious one and they are counting on those they ask to do it. It’s not always easy to be vigilant in prayer; but if we plan to intentionally do it with God’s help, we can. By the way, a big thank you to all of you that have prayed for me.

We Are Mentors
(Whether we want to be or not.) 3/13/2016
“Ms. Suzanne, when we pass you on the street even when you are driving you are smiling.” She then asked me why I’m smiling every time she sees me. I had no idea that fifth grader was watching me and learning from me when I was totally unaware. I remember a young mother telling me about her one child mimicking her, when she was not long from giving birth to his brother. Because she was heavy with child every time she had to bend low she moaned. She hadn’t noticed it until her little boy started doing the same thing. We both had a good laugh over that. But when I started this article; I thought about that simple but telling behavior and how we mentor without realizing it. Who do you think is mimicking your behavior? If you are following Christ, you are mentoring others to do the same.
I’ve said for years that when I grow up I want to be just like John Miller’s mother, Marie Miller. Of course, “grow up” means to mature in Christ. Marie had the sweetest smile and manner about her. She loved the Lord so much and was a true servant. She had a wonderful sense of humor and a twinkle in her eye. She was easy to love. A wonderful mentor. So was Lorene Garner, Linda Blevins’ mom.
Heart Groups
Speaking of mentoring, Heart Groups are where we have intentional mentoring. My group met at my house yesterday. I love when I get their e-mails about coming and how they can’t wait to see each other. This month is our seventh month to meet. What a joy it has been. We will meet through May and then begin again in September for the next session. If you are not in a Heart Group, please prayerfully consider it. We will be starting off the second session with a Heart Fest on August 27.

Awesome Renewal! 3/6/2016
Some of you that have read my articles or heard me speak are going to think Suzanne thinks everything said about God’s Word is awesome. You got that right, I do! Sometimes it touches me so much like the Renewal did that it stays on my heart and mind for a long time. I’m still reaping benefits from Saturday, February 27. Sheila Cruce touched my heart big time. She asked questions like, “Do I play church or am I a true follower of Jesus?” “How would I define my relationship with Jesus?” She backed everything up with scripture and how she had worked these questions out in her life. Awesome, simple awesome! One of her statements that stuck with me was “Children catch stress from us.” She qualifies because Sheila is the principal for CAC at Pleasant Valley, is a mother and a grandmother. She’s been there done that and seen the results first hand. Sheila and her husband are raising their grandchildren. We were left, not down; but hopeful with solutions and a deeper faith.
Then we had another treat, Sherry Pogue spoke to us about stress and some solutions for it. Sherry has a wonderful sense of humor and a lot of wisdom. She, like Sheila, gave us lots to think about and practical ways to work on problems. It was solid good.
Next, our precious Corrie Albright led us in sermons in songs. I was going to list my favorite; but they were all favorites. Lord, Reign in Me, Open the Eyes of My Heart, In Christ Alone and several others. Simply beautiful. Corrie’s beautiful God given voice led them straight to our hearts and enhanced our lessons.
We also spent time at our table with our sisters. We had adult coloring pages which were relaxing for me to color; but more importantly we talked real with each other and got to know each other better. For me, it was a family of sisters laughing and crying together. Sweet, sweet, sweet.
Tani and her team did an outstanding job of fulfilling their mission. The food was really good and the company we kept was the best. To God be the glory!

Knit Together With Love 2/28/2016
Knit Together With Love started off the new year with a new dedication to glorifying God through our knitting. We are partnering with the Missions Committee to provide needed knitted things to our missionaries. We are excited about providing caps and scarves, baby hats and baby blankets and other knitted things to our missionaries in cold climates. They can be given to people with whom our missionaries have contacts.
We appreciate Terry Rainey for coming up with tags we can attach to our knitted things. This will let the recipient know that the item was knitted with love and that it came from the Levy church of Christ.
We are calling all knitters to help us build up an inventory of knitted items so that when our missionaries tell us what they need, we will be able to go pull those things off our shelves and send them immediately. If you can knit, but can’t come to our weekly knitting session in the church library (Wednesday morning at 10:30), please knit for us at home. We can use all the help you can give us. Many people in this world don’t have the blessings we have, but we can share God’s love with them through our knitting.
If you can help us knit, please let Carol Randle know and we will give you ideas for what is most needed.

Missed Y’all! 2/21/2016
Having had a lot of medical problems lately; I’ve really missed seeing my church family. It never ceases to amaze me how comforting church family can be. Phone calls, e-mails, cards, food and visits all make one feel loved and supported. It makes me want to do more for others, more than ever, after church folks have seen about me.
It feels a lot better to be missed than not to be missed at all. All of us have a certain number of people that we sit close to in worship and/or in Bible class weekly. Look around you today. Who do you see missing? Reach out to them by phone, card or visit. Let them know you miss them. God designed the church for our good and a lot of that good is about seeing about each other.
